CareerAbility

Caring for others can be a rewarding way to gain confidence and trust, and experience the satisfaction of making friends whilst doing an important job.

CareerAbility

The Flagstaff Group has formed a community partnership with IRT Group to develop ‘CareerAbility in Aged Care’, providing Flagstaff employees with opportunities to begin a career in aged care.

The CareerAbility in Aged Care program launched in September 2016. It runs for a ten-week period during which you do work experience in IRT Care Centres. This program allows people with disabilities to experience hands on work opportunities with additional skills and training development options.

At completion of the program, you will receive a Statement of Attainment for four units of competency in a Certificate III in Individual Care, as well has having valuable experience in the aged care industry sector.

“My name is Jordan Bowater and I have had supported employment at Flagstaff Group for over 2 years.

I was given the chance to be part of the CareerAbility in Aged Care program. It was a great group of students and I found the course and the teaching was very supportive to my needs. The staff who were mentoring us were really enthusiastic. Having a disability, sometimes I find that people treat me differently, but with this program, while my needs were catered to, in my work placement at the aged care centre, I was treated just the same as everyone else.

I really hope the program continues so that other companies can see the potential of people with disabilities. Instead of focusing on the “dis”people should focus on the “ability”. (Jordan Bowater, employee supported by Careerability).

“The individuals participating in this program have been working in and out of the linen and food services area. Some of them actually do deliveries to aged care customers and so they have an affinity there. They are bursting to take on the challenge and hopefully get an entry-level job or traineeship in aged care.” (Roy Rogers, CEO of Flagstaff)

“Securing a job with IRT or another local care provider to complete their on-the-job training is definitely a realistic outcome for program participants.” (Nieves Murray, IRT Group Chief Executive)
